So I got married May 13th. It was very fun and everything went really smoothly. I think everyone had a good time. Sarah and I did the wedding ourselves, and did a lot of customization to make the wedding look as cool as possible. It started with this:
This was the Save the Date card we sent back in September. I was highly influenced by a Ukrainian illustrator's, Vladislav Erko, playing cards. The card's edges were rounded so it the edges looked better in print, like they had been worn. I did this all in photoshop with my new tablet, it was a lot of fun to try painting that way again, I hadn't digitally painted since college.
Then we got working on the theme of the wedding, which naturally became based on medieval royalty. Sarah came up with the idea for the invitations. They were based on medieval funerary rubbings:
I made them to look as close to us while still being stylized. We were able to find awesome reference of a Danish king, and since I'm Danish, I based myself on him. Sarah was based on a French queen, I believe, but she was a mix of a couple different people. And she's standing on our cat. I was drawing my character, about to put in the eyes, and decided to leave them out. Just thought it looked more interesting. It reminded me of the Disney "The Sword in the Stone" film, where one of the kings just has big bushy eyebrows, no eyes.
We really like movies, so we based the rsvp on that.
Sarah didn't want people to feel self-conscious about which table number they might end up with, so we made all the tables different animals, kind of like house sigils. The wedding party was the crown table. I did not do these drawings, didn't have enough time.
We also had some stuff that I don't have pictures of yet, like the fox fabric print we got for our photo booth backdrop, out wedding toppers, which we might have lost, which were a ceramic king and queen chess pieces, but they were more of busts than the classic abstract chess style. These were our wedding favors, Salmon Rub:
Now are some pictures from the event:
We had our wedding at Gantry Plaza State Park, on a pier in Long Island City, and our reception was at L.I.C. Bar in Long Island City.
